The model tag allows the developer to load external (to the HTML file) models, much as you would load an image. The model cannot be textured. Pieces of the model cannot be directly animated; however, the model may provide events for various animations as defined by the modeler/animator. All events controlling the model need to specify the model tag as the event listener.
